Riding the Reopened Trails of Hungry Valley OHV
The Department of Wander crew set out for a day on the dirt, chasing single track in the Hungry Valley OHV area of Gorman. For many riders across Southern California, Hungry Valley has long been the go-to playground. It’s an easy escape just over an hour from the heart of Los Angeles, where you can twist the throttle and explore miles of open trails.
But in 2024, the Post Fire tore through this region, leaving behind charred hillsides, closed trails, and a sense of loss for both locals and riders who know the area well. For a while, the riding community could only watch and wait as the damage was assessed and recovery efforts began.
Now, one by one, the trails are opening again. With each section cleared and restored, the spirit of Hungry Valley is returning - and it feels good to be back.
Miles of trails extend from Hungry Valley OHV west around Frazier Mountain.
Riding the single track here is always a treat. Flowing turns, stretches of loose sand, climbs that test your balance, and fast runs where you can let the bike breathe. Hungry Valley offers a mix that works for riders of any skill level. Beginners can cut their teeth on the wide-open fire roads, while more experienced riders can dive into the tighter, more technical single track that weaves through the hills.
What makes Hungry Valley so special is the combination of accessibility and variety. In just a little over an hour from downtown L.A., you can find yourself carving through trails surrounded by rugged terrain, big skies, and the kind of freedom that adventure riders crave. It’s the perfect spot to practice your skills, dial in your suspension, or just get lost in the simple joy of riding.
For us, returning to Hungry Valley after the fire wasn’t just about riding. It was about seeing resilience. The land is healing, the tracks are alive again, and the community is back out here, throttles open, smiles wide. It’s a reminder that these places aren’t just dirt and rock. They’re gathering points for stories, friendships, and that shared love of two wheels.
Hungry Valley is open. The trails are calling. And if you’re looking for a quick escape into dirt and freedom, this is the place to answer back.
